Description
This Swiss clock from probably Brienz is carved from a piece of wood, it represents a Swiss Alphornplayer.
After a disastrous famine in 1816 in the Brienz area people were forced to find new areas of revenues. driven by the need to create jobs in the Bernese Oberland, the Swiss government encourage the existing resource of timber industry to liaise with the the traditional wooden craftsmanship.
This was the beginning of the famous wood carving in the region.
One of the most well-known carver was Johann Huggler 1834-1912.
